What should you expect?
Our Feasibility Workshop will span across 7 weeks, and includes 7 different sessions. Each session covers a different topic relevant to becoming a successful vertical farmer.
The sessions are split into the following three phases…
Phase 1: The Marketing Mix
LEARN what to grow, how to package it, what your distribution strategy might look like, and how to approach your pricing strategy. These are important decisions that will impact two key areas of your business: your marketing message and your profit margin.
- How to choose a product line: How understanding your product line will result in increased profitability
Phase 2: Production Estimates
FIND OUT how to reach your target production numbers. We will give you the tools to understand your system design and layout, with pricing numbers you can use for your budget. The production calculator will help you estimate how much you can grow, and help you plan different zones for your crop selection.
- How much can I grow? Understanding production estimates for the ZipFarm vertical plan production system
- Lighting 101: A professional LED solution can cost upwards of $100,000. How do you make an informed decision? We take a look at the latest innovations, and compare standard metrics.
Phase 3: Profitability / Financials
SEE HOW to put all your numbers together in a professional presentation. This session is the most technical part of the workshop, and will give you the tools to understand your revenue projections and your Internal Rate of Return for investment purposes.
- How much will it cost? Capital budgeting for Indoor Farm production.
- How much does it cost to run an indoor farm? Understanding labor costs, consumables, and other major expenses that occur on a regular monthly basis.
- How much energy will I be using? Understanding the energy calculations for your indoor farm.
- How profitable is it? The return on capital is defined as the cash you bring in / the cash you put out. This session will spend time walking through an example production facility, with a closer look at the expenses and cash flows for the business.

Can I register for the workshop anytime?
Yes, you can register at any time for the workshop.
How much does a modern, vertical farm cost?
Growing equipment is only a part of the cost. The workshop goes into depth on the costs for the farming equipment, the lights, the infrastructure, property upgrades, and other related costs.
Is this workshop done as a group? If so, how much 1-1 interaction is there?
No, the workshop sessions are self paced, so you can work on your own time. Just login and you can complete your farm planning any time, day or night.
What if I live outside of the U.S.? Can I still attend the workshop?
You may have some problems registering, but you can still attend. If you would like to register for the workshop, and you live outside of the U.S., please call our office and we can help you sign up.
Please also keep in mind that the workshop calculations will be using USD/lbs, not the metric system. This may require some extra work on your part to convert these numbers.
Are the sessions set at a specific time of day?
The sessions are pre-recorded so that you can watch them whenever it is convenient for you.
What if I want to do a feasibility analysis with other crops?
You might be disappointed. While the workshop can be used to focus on other crop mixes, for example tomatoes or peppers, we don’t have as much data for crop pricing, production numbers, and other important information that you will need.
I have some experience growing already. Will this workshop cover advanced information?
If you have more than a year of experience growing food for market, the workshop will probably be a lot of review for you.
However, if you already have an existing farm, and are wondering about bringing on leafy greens and herbs in a year-round production, then this workshop will give you the insights to know whether it is a good investment or not.
What will the format of the workshop be?
Two of our farm consultants will present the topic in a live recorded video. We spend from 20-30 minutes on each topic, and provide a PDF worksheet with additional resources for each workshop session.
Is this workshop for me?
This workshop is perfect for you if you are looking to start a commercial farming business growing greens and/or herbs with ZipGrow technology. If you’ve been dreaming about it for awhile, this workshop will give you the confidence you need to take the next step towards yoru farming career.
Is this a sales pitch?
Yes. We focus on the costs and revenues using real ZipFarms as an example. However, as long as you know the production values for your particular system, you can easily complete a feasibility study using other growing methods besides the ZipFarm.
What crops do you cover?
We focus our profitability analysis on leafy greens and herbs. These are the most likely candidates for indoor growing, since the harvest cycle is usually 6 weeks or less and can be grown economically under artificial lighting. We also understand the market for greens and herbs much better than other markets.
How much time does it take?
Each workshop session ranges from 20-40 minutes (video). The PDF worksheet is included and provides a number of valuable resources. You should plan on spending 2+ hours a week for 7 weeks to complete the workshop.

This Workshop is a feasibility study for you. When we are done, you will have:
- Revenue projections
- Fixed and variable costs
- A strong market study
- A conservative pricing strategy.
- A capital expense budget.
- A sense of your lighting and energy costs
- Detailed pro forma projections covering cash flow, net income and balance statements
A strong feasibility analysis will give you the confidence to pursue a fully developed business plan. A weak feasibility analysis will give you an advanced warning that it is not worth pursuing further, or that you may need to rethink your approach to the market.
WHAT IT IS NOT
- It is not a tutorial on hydroponics.
- It is not a tutorial on the science or techniques of indoor horticulture.
- It is not a tutorial in finance or entrepreneurship (although we do provide resources for both of these topics).
- It is not an operations plan for an indoor farm, with daily schedules and management training.
